Volume Two picks up the story in the mid-to-late ’80s and then hurtles through time to the early 2000s, concluding with the Focus RS. Incredibly, Ford’s enthusiasm for this unique project went up a gear for the second book in the Secret Fords project.

Over 5000 images from Ford Design’s archive were digitised for the first time – many of them marked ‘STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL’ – bringing Volume Two one step, and two decades, closer to the present. The almost-mythical Ferrari-challenging GN34 supercar is revealed for the first time, along with the never-told design stories of the Escort Cosworth and Focus RS.

The tortured tale behind the ’91 Escort is a revelation – along with the cancelled Escort intended to replace it. Fiesta, Scorpio, Ka, Puma, Mondeo – and more – are all there, along with revealed-for-the-first-time surprises like the Escort Cosworth Coupe and Prodrive’s incredible AWD Cosworth-engined Focus RS replacement. The first Volume won numerous awards including Classic Ford Magazine’s Best Book of 2021 – Volume Two changes up a gear. It’s a unique and extraordinary book.

  • How Ford designed a secret Ferrari-competitor
  • The insiders' first-hand story how the Focus RS and Escort RS Cosworth were designed
  • The evolution of the Fiesta
  • How the ’91 Mark IV Escort forced Ford to reappraise how it designed cars
  • Escort mutants that have never been seen like Cosworth coupes and speedster
  •

This one nicely rounded out my collection of Steve's 5 books on the cult cars and their conception - along with the ones that never quite made it! Just brilliant....

A review can be long or short.

The short one: you should buy this book if you want to see something that perhaps never again in your life.

The design processes are always very closed by default, sometimes for 30 years, sometimes forever. Steve Saxty tried to reveal some hidden development phases. Moreover, he also focuses on the layout and overall presentation of his books. But he added something more: passion, a lot of passion. And this last one might be the most important.

This is another fascinating account of behind the scenes at Ford.

The Foreword by Richard Parry Jones is a must read and his last published words. Steve says this book is dedicated to his memory.

    Apt and appropriate.

    Highly recommended!

The Focus Estate Mk4 I drive is one of Richard's legacies. Superb car with excellent 1.5 litre 3 cylinder petrol engine, another Ford first for design features.

As an automotive designer it is extremely difficult to share just exactly what goes into designing a car. This book gives you an authentic look behind the curtain. If you are a designer or aspire to be one, this is the book you need to read.

Steve Saxty's books have taken journalism to a new level. You get the story from the man who was in the trenches with the conception and development of the cars. If he did not experience it, then his interviews with those that did are translated to the reader.
